Already finished, but stuck in another decade

A lot of basements in Orland Park, Bolingbrook, and Downers Grove were finished in the 80s and 90s and have not been touched since. Wood paneling, drop ceilings with yellowed tiles, worn carpet, and one fluorescent light over the laundry area. The space technically counts as finished, but nobody wants to spend time in it.

Remodeling an existing basement is a different job than finishing a bare one. There is demo to do, surprises behind old walls, and decisions about what stays. We plan for all of it up front so the quote you approve is the quote you pay.

Keep the bones, transform the room

Good remodels reuse what works. If the framing is sound and the layout makes sense, your money goes into the finishes people actually see and touch: drywall ceilings with recessed lighting, luxury vinyl plank or engineered wood floors, a real bar instead of a laminate counter, and paint colors from this decade.

We will tell you honestly which parts of your existing basement are worth keeping and which are costing you more to work around than to replace.

FAQ

Common Questions

Is remodeling cheaper than finishing from scratch?

Usually, but not always. If layout changes and demo are extensive, costs approach a full finish. Most cosmetic-to-moderate remodels in this area land meaningfully below a from-scratch project. An in-home consultation gets you a real number.

Can you remove a drop ceiling and install drywall?

Yes, and it is one of the highest-impact changes in older basements. We reroute anything hiding above the grid, then hang, tape, and finish a flat drywall ceiling with recessed lighting.

We have a bar from the 90s. Can it be updated?

Almost always. Sometimes the plumbing location is reusable and the bar itself is replaced with custom cabinetry, stone counters, and modern lighting. See our basement bar page for what is possible.
